Children in preschool through twelfth grade are educated at the Louis Braille School for Visually Impaired according to the general curriculum. The course of instruction encompasses all academic subjects, which should be studied, as stated in the general school curriculum, approved by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science. Our highly qualified teachers have obtained additional professional qualification, which makes them capable of working with visually impaired children. The organization of the educational process aims at complying with the state educational requirements regarding all school subjects, obligatory for every school in the state. Instruction starts with braille literacy. That is a process based on methods developing tactile sensitivity and requiring special technical aids and devices. The approach is different from the one applied in teaching print literacy. Developing sensory-motor skills, which compensate for the visual impairment, starts in the preschool year. Specialized training programs, daily living skills, orientation and mobility, low vision training and tactile arts, support both the process of literacy development and the entire educational process. The process of education is accomplished the way it is done in all other schools, taking into account the specificities of the compensatory orientation in specialized school instruction; using technical aids, three-dimensional models, tactile images and the ways to use them. In the course of education children learn the specific modes of braille writing for the various school subjects. Acquisition of knowledge in the different subjects involves using specific braille symbols in each subject, specific modes of writing and way of arrangement of text or symbols; this type of knowledge could be properly acquired only at the special school since it provides the experts having the necessary resource and the training. Education in the sphere of information technologies is done according to the specificities of students’ visual impairments, with the help of specialized software. Independent learning is organized in afternoon classes under the supervision of well-trained teachers. Pedagogical activities /independent study, organized sports and recreational activities, extra-curricular activities/ are in conformity with the approved yearly plans of afternoon teachers in primary, secondary and high school as well as children with multiple disabilities.
